Used Dump Truck Buying Guide for African Contractors (2026)

2026-10-12 · 8 min read

A dump truck earns money by moving material, not by looking good in a yard. For contractors in Africa, the difference between a profitable tipper and an expensive lesson usually comes down to four things: body volume, engine, gearbox and frame condition.

Match body volume to the material you haul

Tippers are sold with body volumes from around 10 to 25 cubic metres. The right size depends on the density of what you carry.

Overloading is the single biggest cause of premature failure in used tippers. A body that is too large for the chassis and axle ratings will damage springs, hubs and the frame within a season.

MaterialApprox. densityBody volume that works well
Sand1.5–1.7 t/m³16–20 m³
Gravel / aggregate1.6–1.8 t/m³16–20 m³
Quarry rock (blasted)2.2–2.6 t/m³12–16 m³
Clay / overburden1.8–2.1 t/m³14–18 m³

Engine and drivetrain: what to check

  • Engine hours vs. mileage — for tippers, engine hours matter more than the odometer.
  • Cold start — a healthy engine starts without excessive smoke or knocking when cold.
  • Oil condition — milky or heavily black oil with metal particles is a red flag.
  • Gearbox type — manual boxes are simpler and cheaper to repair locally than automated ones.
  • Differential and hubs — look for oil weeping at the wheel ends.

Frame and body inspection

The chassis frame is the most expensive thing to repair and the easiest to hide. Look for welded patches, cracks around spring hangers, and rust in the rail web rather than surface scale on the flange.

For the tipping body, check the hoist cylinder for leaks, the hinge pins for wear, and the floor plate for deformation from impact loading. A floor that bows under the cab is a sign of heavy abuse.

Brands with the best parts support in Africa

Howo, Shacman, Dongfeng and FAW have the widest parts availability across Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Tanzania. Weichai and Yuchai engines are well understood by local mechanics, which keeps repair downtime short.

Inspection checklist before you pay

  • Cold-start video with the exhaust visible
  • Undercarriage and frame photos in good light
  • Tyre condition — matching pairs and remaining tread
  • Hydraulic system demo — the body lifting and lowering fully loaded if possible
  • Cab interior — instrument cluster, seat, and control condition
  • Matching chassis and engine numbers to the documents
